Aquatic disease testing for shrimp, fish and crab in the Philippines.
High Hope Vet runs qPCR and RT-qPCR testing for shrimp, tilapia, grouper, seabass, milkfish, crab and prawn diseases across the Philippines, with same-day reports on routine tests before 12 noon.
Serving Luzon and clients across the Philippines.
What to test, species by species
Pre-purchase screening, routine monitoring and disease investigations are supported for shrimp, tilapia, grouper, Asian seabass, milkfish, mud crab, giant freshwater prawn and common carp or koi. The species guide below follows the laboratory's Aquatic Disease Testing & Monitoring Handbook. The shrimp seedstock panel (WSSV, AHPND, EHP and IHHNV) is covered in full on the shrimp disease testing page.
| Species | Before purchase or stocking | When signs appear | Tissues to submit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shrimp | WSSV + AHPND (EMS investigation) + EHP + IHHNV for each seedstock batch. | Feed refusal or rising deaths: WSSV + AHPND, plus histopathology, bacterial tests and water quality. Add EHP for slow growth. | Gills and swimming legs for WSSV and IHHNV. Stomach and hepatopancreas for AHPND. Hepatopancreas for EHP. |
| Tilapia | TiLV plus gill and skin parasite checks. | Bulging eyes, circling or rising deaths: TiLV + Streptococcus agalactiae + S. iniae, with bacterial identification, susceptibility testing and water quality. | Liver, brain and eyes for TiLV. Brain, kidney and spleen for streptococci. Gills and skin for parasites. |
| Grouper | NNV plus gill and skin parasite checks. Add RSIV, ISKNV or SGIV if the supplier previously detected them. | Circling, loss of balance or abnormal buoyancy: NNV + bacterial tests, with streptococcal tests for bulging eyes or bleeding. | Brain and eyes for NNV. Spleen and kidney for iridoviruses. Internal organs and affected tissue for bacteria. |
| Asian seabass | NNV plus gill and skin parasite checks. | Circling, loss of balance or bulging eyes: NNV + S. iniae, with bacterial identification, susceptibility testing and water quality. Add SDDV for scale loss with erosion or deaths. | Brain and eyes for NNV. Brain, kidney and other internal organs for streptococci. Spleen and kidney for iridoviruses. |
| Milkfish | Appearance, activity and gill/skin parasite checks, with source and water quality records reviewed. | Bleeding, ulcers or rising deaths: bacterial identification and susceptibility testing, plus histopathology and water quality. The laboratory then selects any nucleic acid tests from the findings. | Gills, skin and affected tissue for parasites. Kidney and other internal organs for bacteria and histopathology. |
| Mud crab | WSSV plus appearance, gill and body-surface checks before arrival, since apparently healthy crabs can carry WSSV. | Feed refusal, weakness or rising deaths: WSSV + bacterial tests + water quality. | Gills and other suitable tissue for WSSV. Gills, surface fouling and affected shell for parasites and bacteria. |
| Giant freshwater prawn | MrNV plus appearance and activity checks before broodstock enter the hatchery or juveniles are shipped. | White abdominal or tail muscle, or deaths: MrNV + XSV, with histopathology and water quality checks. | Abdominal muscle. Small juveniles may be submitted whole. |
| Common carp / koi | KHV plus gill and skin parasite checks before introducing new fish. | Mottled gills or breathing difficulty: KHV + gill parasites + water quality, with histopathology. | Gills and kidney for KHV. Gills, skin and affected tissue for parasites and bacteria. |

Common questions
How do I test tilapia for TiLV (tilapia lake virus)?
TiLV is tested from liver, brain and eye tissue before purchase. If fish show bulging eyes, circling or rising deaths, TiLV is tested together with Streptococcus agalactiae and S. iniae.
What disease testing does grouper farming need before stocking?
Before stocking, grouper juveniles are tested for nervous necrosis virus (NNV) along with gill and skin parasites. If the supplier has previously detected RSIV, ISKNV or SGIV, that virus is added to the panel.
How is milkfish (bangus) disease diagnosed?
Milkfish diagnosis starts with appearance, activity, parasite checks and water quality review before purchase. For bleeding, ulcers or rising deaths, bacterial identification, susceptibility testing and histopathology investigate the cause, and the laboratory selects nucleic acid tests from the findings.
Can mud crabs carry WSSV without showing signs?
Yes. Apparently healthy mud crabs can carry white spot syndrome virus (WSSV), so testing before arrival checks the virus together with gill and body-surface condition.
What tissue samples are needed for fish and crab disease testing?
Typical samples include liver, brain and eyes for TiLV, brain and eyes for NNV, gills and kidney for KHV in carp and koi, and gills with other suitable tissue for WSSV in crabs. The laboratory's free preservation tubes keep tissue usable at room temperature for 72 hours in transit.
